Smart join is the mode most people want: it joins the broken lines inside a paragraph while keeping the blank line between paragraphs, which is exactly the damage a PDF copy does to text.
Other modes strip every break, remove only blank lines, add blank lines between paragraphs, or convert breaks to HTML br tags. Hyphen-split words are rejoined automatically.
