How to Split a PDF: Pages, Chapters and Scans

Splitting a PDF sounds like one job but it is really four: pulling out a single page, breaking a document into chapters, cutting a big file into email-sized pieces, or separating a stack of scans that went into one file by mistake. Each needs a slightly different approach.

Pulling out one page or a few

This is the most common need. You have a twenty-page report and somebody asked for page seven. Use extract mode, type the page numbers, and you get a single new PDF containing only those pages.

The page numbering follows what you see in the PDF reader, starting at 1. If your document has cover pages that are not numbered, count them — the tool counts every physical page.

You can mix single pages and ranges: 1, 4, 9-12 gives you a five-page document with those pages in that order.

Breaking a document into sections

Use ranges mode and list each section as its own range: 1-8, 9-20, 21-34. You get three separate PDFs, downloaded together as a ZIP so you are not clicking save eleven times.

The filenames include the page range, so report-p9-20.pdf tells you what is inside without opening it.

One file per page

Useful when each page is genuinely its own document — a batch of certificates, invoices or receipts that were scanned into one file. One click produces one PDF per page, zipped.

If you have fifty pages you will get fifty files, so rename them afterwards or you will have a folder of scan-p1.pdf through scan-p50.pdf with no idea which is which.

Cutting a file down for email

Chunks mode splits by a fixed number of pages — five pages per file, ten per file, whatever fits. This is the right tool when the problem is file size rather than content.

Before you split for size, check whether compressing gets you there instead. A single 12 MB file that compresses to 3 MB is much easier for the recipient than three separate attachments.

The double-sided scan problem

A common mess: you scanned a stack of double-sided pages by running all the fronts through the feeder, then all the backs. The result has every front page first and every back page after, and the backs are often in reverse order.

Fixing it is a reorder job rather than a split. If the backs came out in reverse, list the pages in the order they should read, or use the odd-then-even button as a starting point.

Does splitting change the file?

No. The pages are copied into the new document exactly as they were — same fonts, same images, same resolution. A split page is byte-for-byte as good as it was in the original.

What does change is the file size relationship. Splitting a 10 MB PDF in half rarely gives you two 5 MB files, because fonts and other shared resources get copied into both. Expect the parts to add up to slightly more than the original.

A word about what you are splitting

People split contracts, bank statements, medical letters and identity documents far more often than they split holiday brochures. Every site that asks you to upload the file first now has a copy of that document on a server you do not control.

Splitting is arithmetic on a file structure — there is no reason it needs a server at all. The tool above does it in your browser, which you can verify by disconnecting from the internet and watching it still work.
